Registration is closed for the October 2021 session.  

This one-day regional training was developed based on recent surveys and feedback about the needs of today’s community college administrators and encompasses years of research. A key finding that drove the development of this program is that being an effective manager is essential in a political environment, but it isn’t enough to be successful.

Management Essentials is intended for those administrators who desire to learn the following knowledge, skills and practices:

  • How to manage up, down and sideways
  • How to extend their influence throughout the organization
  • How to forge strong ties to build momentum

A diverse group of seasoned and dynamic presenters will provide focused training on four topics:

  1. High impact leadership practices and behaviors
  2. Navigating effectively within a complex organization
  3. Project management
  4. Growing others while growing yourself

This is an interactive program where participants are encouraged to share their experiences in a safe learning environment.

The $150 registration fee include all materials, breakfast, lunch and refreshments.

  • Tuesday, February 22, 2022 in Monterey (ACCCA Pre-Conference) 
  • April 2022 in Bakersfield
  • August 2022 in San Diego
  • October/November 2022 in Sacramento

Dr. Angelica Suarez

Dr. Angelica Loera Suarez began her tenure as the 11th President of Orange Coast College (OCC) on July 2019. An educational leader for more than 20 years, she oversees Orange County's largest community college, which has been serving students since 1947. With a student population of approximately 18,000, OCC provides exemplary programs leading to Associate degrees and certificates in more than 130 career programs. OCC is a leader in transfers to four-year institutions, a designated "Military Friendly Institution," a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), and qualifying Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution (AANAPSI).

Before accepting the presidency at OCC, Dr. Suarez served as the Vice President for Student Affairs for the Southwestern Community College District, located in San Diego County. As past president of the California Community Colleges Chief Student Services Officers organization, she championed statewide reform focused on the implementation of innovative, responsive and equitable student success initiatives designed to close student educational gaps. As chair of the San Diego and Imperial Counties Chief Student Services Officers, she led efforts to strengthen the pathway for students to local transfer universities.

Dr. Suarez' personal narrative as an immigrant and first-generation college student connects her very directly to the shared experiences of California community college students. Her collective community college experience has provided her with multiple perspectives as a former student, classified staff member, faculty member, and administrator. Her educational background includes a doctoral degree in educational leadership and policy studies from Loyola University Chicago, a master's degree in counseling psychology from California State University at Long Beach, a bachelor's degree in psychology from California State University at Long Beach, and an associate degree from East Los Angeles College.


Dr. John Weispfenning

John Weispfenning, Ph.D. is the Chancellor of the Coast Community College District. Dr. Weispfenning, former President of Santiago Canyon College, Orange, California, and Vice President of Instruction at Orange Coast College, is the author of two dozen plus scholarly publications and papers related to working with media organizations, processes, and content. Dr. Weispfenning has been noted for his published work in the Journal of Communication, Mass Communication Quarterly, and Mass Comm Review and brings his experience as a journalist and broadcaster with radio stations throughout the Midwest to the Coast District.

The native North Dakotan has years of experience in and knowledge of the California Community College System. Dr. Weispfenning served on the Executive Board of the California Community Colleges Chief Instructional Officers and on the Executive Board of the Council of Chief Librarians of the California Community Colleges.

Dr. Weispfenning received his doctorate from Purdue University and earned his Master of Science in Communication from North Dakota State University. He also earned a Bachelor of Science in Mass Communication from Minnesota State University, Moorhead.


Dr. Geisce Ly

Dr. Geisce Ly’s career reflects more than 25 years of dedicated service uplifting students to achieve their educational goals and empowering leaders to be positive change agents. He has been in the California Community College system since 2008 and currently serves as Dean of the Downtown Campus and School of Business at City College of San Francisco.

He is actively involved with ACCCA—serving as Chair of the Management Development Commission, Co-Chair of the ACCCA Mentor Program, and Chair of the Management Essentials Program. Geisce is passionate about motivating others to live their best life and do their best work. He earned a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from University of Michigan, a M.Ed. in Counselor Education from Penn State University, and a B.A. in Social Ecology from UC Irvine.


Henry Gee

Henry Gee retired after completing his 41st year in higher education, and his sixteenth year as the Vice President of Student Services at Rio Hondo College in Whittier CA in July 2020.  He is currently serving as the part-time Executive Director of the Rio Hondo Foundation. He served for 10 years as the Dean of Student Affairs at Santa Ana College and 15 years at Azusa Pacific University in various capacities.  He has been active with the NASPA, Student Affairs Professionals in Higher Education, having served in many roles regionally and nationally, from New Professionals to the Network for Educational Equity and Ethnic Diversity (NEEED), two annual conference committees, and countless regional conference committees, a term on the Scott Academy Board and a term on the Foundation Board; he has served as the Region VI Director for NASPA and has rejoined the Foundation Board.  He has also served as the co-facilitator for the past twenty-four years of the Leadership Development Program for Higher Education (LDPHE), now known as LEAP Advance, a program sponsored by the Asian Pacific Americans in Higher Education (APAHE) and the Leadership Education for Asian Pacifics (LEAP).  Henry was a member of the inaugural LDPHE class in 1997 and is a former Board member of APAHE.

Henry has received numerous awards including the inaugural Community College Award, both regionally and nationally from NASPA. He received the Scott Goodnight Award, and the Fred Turner awards from NASPA as well, again both regionally and nationally. He was honored by the Asian Pacific Islander Knowledge Community with the Doris Michiko Ching Shattering the Glass Ceiling Award and also the Outstanding Mentoring Award, which was subsequently named the Henry Gee Outstanding Mentoring Award.

On a personal note, Henry is a 1st generation college student, a product of the California Community College system, married, has a son who graduated from Cal Poly Pomona and majored in Landscape Architecture; they have a daughter who is graduated from California Lutheran University with a major in Communications and Marketing.


Dr. Lisa Rodriguez

Dr. Lisa Rodriguez is a career educator and is a professional development expert. With 30 years in the Community College and University settings, she has taught more than 120-course sections in English Composition, Study Skills, and Technology for Educators. During her tenure as an administrator, she has held posts as Director of faculty development center, a graduate student support program, Title V Developing Hispanic Institutions grants, as well as professional and organizational development office.

Dr. Rodriguez is a seasoned diversity, equity, and inclusion trainer with nearly 70 workshops developed and delivered. She holds a Ph.D. in Higher Education from Claremont Graduate University, a certificate in Project Management from CalTech's Center for Technology and Management Education. Painter, Photographer, R&B aficionado, Trekkie, Ravenclaw, and Anime fan best describes her out-of-office endeavors.


Tim McGrath

Tim McGrath, an educational leader for more than 22 years in higher education, serves as the eighth president of Golden West College (GWC).  GWC is part of the Coast Community College District located in Huntington Beach, California serving more than 18,900 students annually.  Before accepting the presidency at GWC in 2018, Tim served as the vice president of instruction at San Diego Mesa College for the San Diego Community College District (SDCCD).  

His academic credentials include a Juris Doctorate from Western State University College of Law; a Master of Science in Administration from Pepperdine University; a Bachelor of Science in Law from Western State University College of Law; and an Associate of Arts degree from Santa Monica College.


Dr. Vince Rodriguez

Dr. Vince Rodriguez grew up in Orange, California. He graduated from Orange Coast College with an Associate degree and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology and a Master of Arts in Education with an emphasis in Distance Learning and Adult Education. In 2011 he completed his study related to retention of online students while earning his doctorate in Educational Leadership from California State University, Long Beach.

Dr. Rodriguez has been a member of the Coast Community College District since 1998 and has worked as a classified employee, instructor, and administrator. Over his 20+ years at Coastline, he provided leadership at each of Coastline’s learning centers and spent many years overseeing a Distance Learning program that accounted for nearly 75% of the enrollments at the College. Dr. Rodriguez has served in the roles Vice President of Instruction at Coastline for nine years. On July 1, 2021, he began his current assignment as President of Coastline College. He is a resident of Huntington Beach and in his free time, volunteers as a coach and referee for the Costa Mesa region of the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO).
